About
Mark Algar Artist’s Statement
At the heart of Mark’s art lies a deep-seated passion for storytelling. He captures fleeting vignettes of people’s lives while revealing the beauty and complexity of human presence within the world’s remarkable landscapes.
Mark’s work captures the people he met through his travels through Europe, North America, Africa, India and New Zealand, usually in a setting of unbelievable beauty – ranging from the chaotic to very calm. Sometimes there is only a hint of the human presence, such as the distant buildings in the painting of the French Alps. Other times, there are crowds of people enjoying themselves on the beach in summer.
Oil paint is Mark’s chosen companion in this pursuit. He is captivated by oil’s buttery texture and forgiving nature, which allows him to work patiently, layering memories and impressions until the colours and forms resonate with the moment he wishes to preserve. Whether painting en plein air or bringing images to life in his Belleville, Ontario studio, he strives to honour each subject’s essence.
